Finding the best online HBCU graduate school for your particular needs can be challenging. Most HBCUs offer some distance learning, but the programs themselves vary substantially from school to school. Undergraduate programs can be a little easier to find, but when it comes to online graduate programs, sometimes you need to do a little digging. Luckily, we’ve done that work for you.
Our list of the top Historically Black Colleges and Universities that offer online graduate degree programs may be the most comprehensive on the web. We’ve researched every HBCU offering graduate programs and then drilled down even further to find the ones that offer them online. We used US News and World Report’s ranking of the Best Historically Black Colleges and Universities, HBCU-Colleges.com, The One Hundred Seven, HBCU Lifestyle, and of course, Online College Plan’s list of the Top 20 Best Historically Black Colleges with Online Programs.
The result of our research is what you see before you. For each school, we have listed every program that is offered online at the graduate level. Some offer one or two, while other schools have several options. The important thing is that you are able to find the program that will help you meet your educational goals. The Best HBCUs With Online Graduate Programs: Methodology
The ranking system we’ve used to create this list is based on various factors, such as the total cost for the program, how many applicants get admitted, and the student-to-faculty ratio. Online College Plan uses data from the National Center for Education Statistics to determine the best programs. We also obtain information directly from the institutions, U.S. News and World Report, and other sources.
Each part of the criteria represents several points, and we have listed them in ascending order, with the number one school at the bottom of the list. When there is a tie between schools, we give higher placement to the HBCU with lower total tuition fees.
With the criteria that we’re using, here’s how we’ve calculated those points:

- Less than $15,000– 3 points
- $15,001 to $20,000– 2 points
- Over $20,001– 1 point
Acceptance Rate
- More than 50% of applicants accepted – 3 points
- 25% to 50% of applicants accepted – 2 points
- Less than 25% of applicants accepted – 1 point
Student-to-Faculty Ratio
- 10 to 1 or less – 3 points
- 11 to 15 to 1 – 2 points
- 16 or more to 1 – 1 points
Please note that the listed tuition is based on the average in-state cost per academic year for graduate programs at each school. Therefore, prices can vary between programs and often depend on whether you are a resident, a non-resident, or an online student.
Additionally, the cost of tuition may be significantly lower for students eligible for financial aid. Sometimes, you can even apply previously earned credits toward your degree, depending on the school or program. Each student’s situation will differ. 20. Howard University

Howard University is a private HBCU founded in 1867, just after the Civil War. The school has more than 10,000 students, making it one of the largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation. There are extensive opportunities here, but only one fully online graduate degree program—an online Master of Social Work.
This program was designed explicitly to build a future where students can attend a leading HBCU and “become architects of liberation in diverse communities and professional contexts.” Since the field of Social Work has always been about the struggle for social justice, the program commits itself to educating practitioners who are guided by historical and sociocultural context and the lens of the Black Perspective.
Students can typically complete the Master of Social Work (60 credits) in about 36 months or get an Advanced Standing MSW (45 credits) in as little as 24 months. There are also two concentrations:
- Direct Practice Concentration
- Community, Administration, and Policy (CAP) Practice Concentration
Additionally, students will work within their own communities to participate in a field education that aligns with their particle concentration and goals. The field education portion consists of 777 to 1000 hours. A placement team will partner with you to find just the right (and reputable) agency where you can put your skills to work, learn new techniques, and expand your professional network.
19. Tuskegee University

Tuskegee University is a private HBCU founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington and is the only historically black college or University in the country that is also a designated National Historic Site. It’s relatively small, with a student body of just over 3,000. However, students (even those who attend online) have many opportunities to get involved on campus since the school has over 100 organizations and groups to suit every interest.
The two online graduate degree programs at Tuskegee focus on the environmental field and include a Master of Science in Environmental Science or a Master of Science in Environmental Management. Both are designed for those working in the field already, and students who wish to pursue either program can do so without disrupting their current careers.
The school adheres to a rolling admission policy which means that applications are accepted until they reach capacity. For this reason, it’s wise to plan ahead and apply as early as you can. Provided the requirements are met, the slots for the program are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Acceptance is provisional, and students will also need to complete two courses with at least a B grade for full acceptance.
The school uses Blackboard as its online learning management platform, and students are encouraged to check out a free demo course before deciding whether they want to enroll in an online degree program or not.
18. Alcorn State University

The school was founded in 1871 by the people of Mississippi to educate the descendants of former slaves. Alcorn was named after the governor at that time, James Alcorn. 16. Hampton University

Hampton University is a private, Historically Black University located in Hampton, Virginia. It was founded by the American Missionary Association in 1868, shortly after the American Civil War, to provide education for freedmen, making Hampton one of the oldest HBCUs in the United States.
The school has a vibrant campus of over 4,500 students, around 500 of whom are graduate students. While the online master’s degree programs are limited to Counseling (with a general concentration) and Cybersecurity, Hampton University does offer an Educational Specialist degree in Counseling and four doctoral programs:

Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is an HBCU located in Tallahassee. The school was founded in 1887 as a nursing and pharmacy program and a hospital serving blacks—the only one within a 150-mile radius. In 2016 it was promoted to a Doctoral University and received Carnegie Classification.
FAMU is a large school attended by over 9500 students. It is also the only HBCU college located in Florida and a top-ranked historically black college or University by US News & World Report.

The MPH program at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is one of the top producers of African American public health professionals in the US. 13. Alabama State University

12. Fort Valley State University

Students who choose to pursue an MS in Rehabilitation Counseling at Fort Valley can complete their courses entirely online or select some hybrid courses that will take them to campus periodically. This 61-semester hour program was designed to be highly flexible for those already working in the field or juggling other life commitments. There are a limited number of graduate assistantships offered to qualifying students for this specific program.

The University is part of the University of North Carolina System. This school operates many different centers, including the Institute for Civic Engagement and Social Change and the Juvenile Justice Institute.

Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is a private, co-ed school affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Founded in 1904 as the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School, B-CU is a small school of fewer than 3000 students, so it’s a close-knit educational community, even for students who study online. Additionally, there are over 80 groups and organizations for students to get involved with.
B-CU offers four online graduate degrees:

7. Claflin University

Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Claflin University is an HBCU established by Methodist missionaries in 1869. With an undergraduate student body of approximately 2,000, it’s a relatively small HBCU compared to some of the others on our list. The coursework needed to complete these programs is asynchronous, so you don’t need to log in at specific times with the rest of your classmates. For online students, there is one compressed Summer session plus two sessions in the Fall and Spring. Classes are eight weeks long, and most students choose to take two or three at one time. All students also have an academic advisor who will help them map out a path that helps them meet their goals.
