Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU)

FAMU is a public, historically black university located in Tallahassee, Florida. It was founded in 1887 and is the fifth largest HBCU in the United States with close to 10,000 students. Their School of Nursing has been in existence for 80 years, and offers a four-year Baccalaureate Program which provides the foundations of a liberal arts education while starting its students on track towards becoming an RN. The School of Nursing also offers a Masters of Science in Nursing through their Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, which prepares students to become primary care physicians for adults. Core courses for the masters degree include Theories in Nursing, Research Methods and Evidence-Based Practice, and Special Issues Across the Adult Life Span.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT)

NCAT is a public HBCU that was founded in 1891 and is located in Greensboro, North Carolina. NCAT’s College of Health and Human Sciences School of Nursing was established in 1953, and offers bachelors degrees in nursing with three different tracks: traditional, accelerated second degree, and RN completion. The traditional track is meant for new freshman, and includes a basic liberal arts background to complement nursing classes. The accelerated track is for students who have already obtained a non-nursing bachelor’s degree and are going back to school to become a nurse. The RN completion track is for nurses who are already practicing, and want to upgrade their associates degree to a bachelor’s degree.

Hampton University

Hampton University is a private HBCU that was founded in 1868 after the Civil War, and is located in Hampton, Virginia. The Hampton University School of Nursing has been in existence for over 100 years, and offers nursing programs at all levels of higher education. For baccalaureate study, the school offers traditional and accelerated bachelors degrees, and has recently added a new curriculum for health sciences. The school also offers master’s degrees in three areas of nursing: Nursing Administration, which focuses on management of nursing services; Nursing Education, which prepares students to become faculty in classroom and clinical instruction for nurses; and Nursing Practitioner, which prepares students to become a Family, Pediatric Primary Care, or Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. They also offer a Ph.D. in nursing which emphasizes family and family-related research.

Bowie State University

Bowie State University is a public HBCU that was established after the Civil War in 1865, and is located just north of Bowie, Maryland. Bowie offers a bachelor degree in nursing, which supplements classroom studies with community-based clinical placements to provide students with hands-on experience. They also offer a Master of Science in Nursing program which prepares students to become either family nurse practitioners, or nurse educators.
