Continuing our series of best online college by state rankings, we have examined all New Hampshire online college programs and chosen to showcase the top 20 based on the methodology below in this piece.

New Hampshire is a relatively small state, the population falling just shy of 1.5 million. It was the first of the original 13 colonies that settled in North America to declare independence from England, six whole months prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence! The Granite State is also home to the first potato grown on our soil, the first alarm clock, and the first free public library! U.S. News & World Report currently ranks New Hampshire as number one in the country for public education, and number three overall. As far as high school goes, New Hampshire has the highest graduation rate in its region, at 87.3% and the lowest dropout rate in the country at a consistent 1.3%. For higher education, New Hampshire was the top exporter of college students in the United States. Roughly 60% of the high school graduates who do go to college choose to do so out of state.

There are only 28 institutions of higher education throughout the entire state; the first one to be established was Dartmouth College in 1769. Dartmouth College is an incredible school, and one of eight Ivy League institutions in the nation. However, it was not ranked here because the distance-learning options for students were indeterminable. Despite the high rate of migration, enrollment rates are slowly increasing in New Hampshire, including a high number of non-resident online students! Four-year public colleges in New Hampshire have a 90.2% completion rate, which is the second highest in America. Overall, the graduation rate across all 28 schools was most recently reported to be 70.1%, considerably higher than the national average. What this says, is the New Hampshire’s higher education is undoubtedly growing. More students are taking an interest in the educational opportunity in the state. In this ranking, we hope to shed some light on the school selection process for those of who are joining the trend.

This ranking is the Top 20 Best Online College Programs in New Hampshire. To create this article, the list of New Hampshire schools was created. All private for-profit schools were excluded, and then all schools with no clear distance-education options were excluded. The remaining twenty schools were scored according to the following:

Methodology

Each school on this list was scored out of a possible 200 points. The two factors used to determine the scores were:

  • 50%: Freshmen Retention Rates and;
  • 50%: Graduation Rates

All of the information utilized in the curating of this list and then scoring it was collected from the school’s websites whenever possible. In cases where a school did not provide the information on its own, the databases of both U.S. News and World Report and the National Center for Education Statistics were used. These two percentages were added together to get the score for each institution, and then they were ranked out of 20 based on this score. We chose these two ranking criteria because when both rates are taken into account, they help to paint an accurate picture of a school’s overall performance. They are indicative of student satisfaction and program quality.

To determine the best program at each school, information provided by the National Center for Education Statistics was used to determine which program had the most graduates in the recent academic years.

We also referred to our own ranking of the top 100 best online colleges while researching this ranking.

Please note, some schools may rank lower because the available data was incomplete. It is possible that not all required courses for each program are eligible to be completed online; however, to the best of our knowledge, the information presented is accurate. No school on this list was given any preferential treatment in return for anything; the methodology stated above would create the same conclusion for anyone.

20: Antioch University-New England

Antioch University-New England is a private graduate school in Keene, New Hampshire, although Antioch University System includes campuses all over the United States. The first iteration of AUNE opened doors in 1964, in the state of Vermont. At the time, it was Antioch College. Due to expansion, it later moved to Harrisville, New Hampshire. Antioch College ended up closing its doors entirely in the early 2000’s due to financial struggle. A group of alumni negotiated a separation between Antioch College and the adult education system that Antioch University-New England is a part of, so now AUNE is its own entity. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and has one of the only Dance/Movement Therapy Counseling degree programs to be endorsed by the American Dance Therapy Association.

AUNE has a strong focus on graduate education, but despite the designation as a graduate school, it offers eight different online bachelors degree programs. The school’s hybrid Master of Education degree program is one of the best offered. This program culminates in a teaching certification, with three different certificates available for students to select from Elementary Teaching, Early Childhood Education, or Dual Elementary/Special Education Certification. The best program that AUNE offers entirely online is arguably the MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Courses include Crisis Intervention, Psychopathology, and more.
