Cairn University has been known by many names during its 103+ year history but has always been dedicated to teaching the Word of God. The school was named Cairn University in 2012 so that it would no longer be inferred that it solely offers Bible studies. Cairn University offers many fields of study and graduate degrees that are not centered on vocational ministry.

History of Cairn University

Cairn University is a private, not-for-profit, coed Christian university located on 115 acres in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, which is near Philadelphia. The school was founded in 1913 in Center City Philadelphia as Philadelphia Biblical University. After a merger of two schools in 1951, its name was changed to Philadelphia Bible Institute. Until 1958, the school offered only three-year degrees tailored mainly for working people.

In 1958, the school was renamed to Philadelphia College of Bible. The college received approval to begin offering a four-year program, giving rise to the Bachelor of Science in Bible degree. This four-year degree trained students to work in the ministry and other organizations connected to the church.

In 1967, the college was one of few Bible colleges in the United States to receive regional accreditation, which was from the Middle States Association. It continued to distinguish itself by adding Liberal Arts, Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Social Work programs to prepare students for various careers.

The school relocated to its current campus in Langhorne in 1979 and added Bachelor degrees in Education and Business Administration and a wide range of graduate-level programs. Its name was changed to Philadelphia Biblical University in 2000 after it was granted approval for university status. In 2012 it became Cairn University as we know it today.

The Rocky Statue and Steps are two of the most popular tourist attractions in Philadelphia. There may be a small line, as everyone must triumphantly run up the steps and pose for a picture with the bronze statue before leaving Philly.

Cairn University’s athletic program is affiliated with the Colonial States Athletic Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Men’s sports at Cairn University include:

The school won its very first NCAA conference championship in 2014 when the men’s Cross Country team won the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship. They repeated this feat the very next year.

The Cairn University men’s soccer program has won seven NCCAA Div II National Championships (in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1996).
